This past July I took an amazing trip to Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands with MassArt's Art Education MAT program. It was an incredible experience.

The opening is tomorrow, and will be up through the entire month.

Sketch crawl!!
So for those of you who have no idea what a sketch crawl is...
it's where artist get together and draw!
So this past Saturday was the official sketch crawl day!
Chris and I went out, met a couple of friends, made some new ones.. and drew all day!
It was pretty awesome.
So here's what I did!
We started at The Middle East in Cambridge...
And because it was raining..we actually didn't even make it out of Central Square.
We were going to make our way to Harvard Square..but it was cold and wet.
But we still had a good time!
The next one is in 3 months, I highly recommend you all join in.
(all of you that draw that is..)

This was at "The Tavern"- a sports bar..
You can tell I'm not a "sports bar" kind of person.
Still fun!
I love it when people yell and the tv..
I feel I have to remind them that the Red Sox can't hear them..

So Chris and I were talking about how cool it is to see other artists' spaces and materials. So I decided to make a little photo collage thinger..
Showing and explaining the whys and whats of my space.

1. obviously wonder woman wearing a mardis gras feather mask.
2. many scarfs hanging from hanger...hanging from window..
3. sarong things hanging over white curtains.
4. steadfast Powerbook G4!
5. not so steadfast printer/scanner... (haven't used the printer since.. like freshman year of college...(underneath, monitor, used for detail photoshop stuff)
6. oil painting in progress (although, it's been neglected for about a week now)
7. dried roses hanging over bed
8. broken cd player (I plug it into my computer- use the speakers)
9. misc. "Sarah" things.. incase I forget my name- (thanks mom)

So this is sort of the entirety of my room... in a sort of cut and paste panoramic kind of view from the door.

Here's a little closer look where I sit when I draw.

1. travel case with misc. watercolor pencils, pitt brush pen- black and brown, stadler lead holder- 2H lead.
2. cheapest, awesomest, waterbrush for travel watercolors- Highly recommend!!(you can get them for super cheap at Paper Source or The Art Store.. probably Utrecht too..
3. elephant ear
4. travel watercolor case. I love, love, love this little thing! So handy dandy for those on the go watercolor needs!
5. small sketchbook- generally I prefer moleskins, but Chris got me this little guy because I was in a slump, and needed a crappy little sketchbook I wasn't afraid to ruin... so far it's treated me pretty well! (this is an Ecojot)
6. various ADD crap- including, but not limited to, misc beady necklaces, cell phone, old pay checks, roll of painters' tape, sleep aid, snack baggy of rolaids, ex hard drive.
7. photo of family from a church thing from a super long time ago... when we were churchy.
8. crappy printer we spoke about earlier.
9. my superhero stead of a computer... ::loves her mac:: ::purrrrrrr:: notice awesome desktop photo of fat girls on beer cans... the beer is called "Frothingslosh"...
10. trusty wacom tablet.

And of course..
We mustn't forget our nag champa incense.

I think it's helped me sort of get my brush and pen moving again..

Itsy bitsy teensy weensy drawings

So recently I've gotten very interested in some experimenting..
Taking myself a little tiny bit out of my normal comfort zone..and some really fun things have come out of it.
I've been trying my hand at making these really small, detailed, line drawings by just using a micron, with no preliminary pencil sketch first.
Most of the microns have been .005 or like .03.
The other new developement has been gouache.
I used to use gouache every once and a while...but basically had a pretty negative experience with it at school. (While I was still in the illustration department...)
But now trying it again in my own time.. I seem to be having more fun with it..
So anyway, here's some new fun drawings!

ps: gouache is used in the paintings that are more opaque, and the ones that are more translucent are watercolor. And if you'd like a more detailed look, click the pictures for a bigger version!)

The following skeleton drawings were from a life drawing session.. I know what you're thinking..It's a skeleton..how can it be from life...
Well, this guy, Mister Rousche, makes these awesome monster masks, and posed for us playing his guitar...

So this weekend I went to MoCCa in NYC, in SoHo, for the comic art fest...
It was a lot of fun..I got to drop my book off at a few publishers, like Top Shelf, the people that publish Flight...Meat Haus
And a few artists...
It was really fun...a little overwhelming..but great.
I got to meet a lot of my favorite artists.. including Farel Dalrymple... whom I really admire.
I was so totally awkward when I met him...but he did a drawing in my sketchbook!
So it was worth it.
Hahha

These drawings didn't scan so well... I have a moleskin with creamy off-white pages...and even with tweaking my levels in photoshop... my pencil lines get a little lost. And in the last drawing especially... I was goofing around with a photo sensitive blue pencil...and of course, that, when I scanned... mostly disappeared...
stupid.
